How do I find my partner's ring size (without them noticing)?
If you want to surprise your significant other with an engagement ring, or perhaps just a super nice gift – without them knowing your intention. Then I have put together a few tips on how it can be done:
All good partners have tried to buy sneakers for their significant other, and have gone through the process of sneaking a peek at the shoes, finding the size, and this is somewhat similar – just a level higher.
Without them noticing
This can be a bit of a "mission impossible" and perhaps you already imagine yourself dressed in black ninja clothes and making your way through various sound/light alarms to reach the crown jewel – it's not necessarily that wild. The greatest skills it requires are simply patience, time, and attention.
First step: without the love of your life noticing, try to sniff out which rings are on which fingers, and on which hands. Extend the observations over a longer period (to make it less suspicious).
Second step: wait until the person is out of the house, then check the jewelry box or dish, and when you spot the right ring, put it in your pocket, find the local jeweler, or arrange to meet with me in Valby, Copenhagen, where I will be happy to help measure the ring size with professional tools.
Alternatively, second step: find a caliper and learn how to use it (it's not necessarily intuitive to use such a gadget), or use a ruler or tape measure and place the ring over it to measure the inner diameter. Here, tenths of a millimeter determine the ring size, but don't despair – it can be expanded/reduced if necessary.
My partner is too observant
If you already know that your partner will spot your searching glances at their fingers, and/or notice that you rummage through their jewelry from time to time, you may have to use other methods.
The fun one: go to the nearest pick-and-mix candy store and buy a candy ring (perhaps first order a diamond of e.g. 0.30 ct from me and enclose it), cross your fingers, and propose. Take your beloved under your arm to my workshop, where we will create your dream ring together.
The timely one: I will lend you one of my display rings from my current collection. After your proposal, you will visit my workshop and get the correct size measured. After this, I will make the ring especially for you.
The friend is the key
The last model may be the right one for you. If there is a best friend, it's worth trying to bring them by my workshop (or the local jeweler) to find out if the person knows (I'd guess there's a high probability here) what size is needed and what design/appearance your beloved likes. Bingo!

NOTE: Traditionally, the ring should be moved from the left hand to the right hand when one gets married. The ring can always be expanded, but preferably not too many times. Therefore, it is very wise to find a size that is as close as possible. Remember that finger sizes change throughout life – e.g., if one is pregnant.
