Gold is a precious metal with many properties, but even gold jewellery gets dirty over time due to daily wear. In this guide, I share tips to preserve the beauty and shine of your gold jewellery.
1. Give your jewellery a bath!
Although professional ultrasonic cleaning is effective, you can also care for your jewellery at home. A warm soapy bath, using a mild soap, is an easy and good solution. Soak your jewellery for ten minutes, use a new and soft toothbrush to remove dirt, and polish them with a jewellery polishing cloth to revive their shine.
2. Professional polishing
If you want to give your jewellery a thorough refresh - which I only recommend doing every few years - you can visit your local jewellery store. Avoid frequent polishing, as this can reduce the lifespan of the jewellery by gradually removing material.
3. Ultrasound - effective and gentle
Here, you can have your jewellery cleaned with ultrasound, which effectively "shakes" off dirt using high-frequency vibrations. An ideal solution for those who want a deep cleaning. Contact me here.
4. Check your stones regularly
If your jewellery has gemstones, you should have them checked regularly. If you experience problems such as snagging, you should immediately have the stones checked to avoid losing them.
5. Rhodium plating of white gold
White gold jewellery can lose its colour over time. Rhodium plating is a process where rhodium is applied to regain the white "white gold look". The frequency of rhodium plating depends on factors such as use and the chemistry of your hands.
6. When should I take off my rings?
Avoid wearing rings during activities such as exercise, e.g., weightlifting, or gardening, to prevent unnecessary knocks and damage. Another time when you should remove your gold rings is when cleaning with chemicals. Generally, use your common sense when you feel that an activity could harm your rings.
Final thoughts on jewellery and care
Personally, I believe that jewellery should be worn and enjoyed, but with care. I am available for ultrasonic cleaning and advice on care, so your jewellery remains beautiful and radiant. If you have any questions or need help, you are always welcome to contact me.
