Garnet is January's birthstone.
Birthstones are a concept covering a range of precious and semi-precious stones, one to several for each month, that represent and strengthen those born in those months. They are typically used in jewelry given as maternity gifts, christenings, or other special occasions.
In Christianity, birthstones have historically been mentioned as far back as biblical times, where twelve stones symbolized twelve different tribes in Israel. In Hinduism, birthstones have also had historical significance, where various stones, especially ruby and spinel, have held meaning and stood for cosmic harmony and prosperity for centuries. In modern times, birthstones have become commonly known as accessories, supposedly because the National Association of Jewelers in the USA, in 1912, set out to standardize an official order and meaning for all months of the year. Since then, various changes have been made to the list, with the most recent change in 2016, where spinel was added for August. I therefore use this guide as the official sequence today, with the risk that the list may change as the years go by.
Origin of Garnet
Garnet, January's birthstone, has been used since the Bronze Age as a gemstone and for adornment. It is a stone with great variation in colors and contrasts and is found in many places around the world, with the deep red garnet being the most well-known. Most garnets have inclusions (shadows) in the stones, which occur completely naturally. They are usually available in round, oval, and cushion cuts.
Super powers
It is said that Garnet is a protective stone that ensures the owner does not come to harm. In addition, garnet is associated with vitality, love, and light. In Indian astrology, the gemstone has been associated with removing negative emotions, such as guilt and depression. The deep red color usually symbolizes love and passion.
