When I create jewellery, it all starts with a material that can be shaped and transformed – wax. This is where my ideas begin to take physical form, before they become wedding rings, engagement rings or other unique pieces of jewellery in gold. Wax modelling is one of the most sensual parts of my craft, and it is here that I can truly experiment and let creativity flow freely.
What is wax modelling?
Wax modelling is a traditional technique where jewellery is first shaped in wax before being cast in gold or silver. This provides a unique freedom to create organic shapes and structures that can be difficult to achieve in other ways.
For me, this process is essential, especially when I design wedding rings and engagement rings. It allows me to create jewellery with a vibrant, organic expression – where the shapes are not just perfect and symmetrical, but have movement, softness and character.
Inspiration from nature
When I work with wax, the inspiration often starts somewhere completely different – in nature. My jewellery often takes shape in my mind while I walk along the beach near my summer house on Falster, where I gather impressions from the ocean waves, the roots of the trees and the wind moving through the landscape.
I store the sensory impressions and then translate them into sketches, and then into three-dimensional forms in wax. I let the material lead the way and experiment with structures and curves, precisely as nature's forms evolve over time.
When wax meets fire
I prefer to work with a harder wax that I can mill, cut and engrave. When I heat the wax, magic happens – the shapes begin to flow and reveal new details that I might not have planned. This is where the finest nuances emerge, and where I can play with movement and light.
Once the shape is in place, the wax model is cast in gold. The wax is burned away, and the jewellery emerges in metal – ready to be refined and polished to its final form.
Organic wedding and engagement rings
For many couples who come to me to have their wedding rings made, it is precisely the handmade and organic quality that appeals to them. They want rings that are not just a standard model, but which feel personal and sensual – jewellery that carries a story and feels alive.
When I create wedding rings in wax, I work with soft curves, natural textures and shapes that feel comfortable on the hand. Some rings are more stringent and classic, while others have a more fluid and nature-inspired expression – but common to all of them is that they all bear the hallmark of the craftsmanship process.
